5 E-Scooter Maintenance Tips to Avoid Costly Repairs
Written by Nick from ElectriFix Perth
Most scooter repairs we see could have been prevented with basic maintenance. These five checks take less than 10 minutes and will save you money in the long run. Here's what we recommend.
1. Check Tyre Pressure Weekly
This is the single most important maintenance task. Under-inflated tyres wear out faster, reduce range, and feel sluggish. Over-inflated tyres give a harsh ride and are prone to punctures from impacts. Check your tyre pressure weekly with a digital gauge ($10 from any auto shop). The correct pressure is usually printed on the tyre sidewall — typically 40-50 PSI for most scooters. Tyres naturally lose 5-10 PSI per week through the rubber, so regular checks are essential. Proper tyre pressure extends tyre life by 30-50% and improves range. It takes 2 minutes.
2. Inspect Brake Pads Monthly
Brake pads wear down over time. If you let them wear completely down, you'll damage the rotor (expensive to replace) and compromise your safety. Check your brake pads monthly. For disc brakes, look through the caliper — you should see at least 1-2mm of pad material left. If the pads are getting thin, replace them before they're metal-on-metal. For drum brakes (common on Xiaomi scooters), you can't see the pads, but you can feel it — if you have to pull the lever all the way to the handlebar to get braking power, the pads are worn. Replacing pads early is cheap ($20-$40). Replacing a damaged rotor or drum costs much more. If you're not sure how to check brake pads, bring your scooter in and we'll show you.
3. Store Your Battery Properly
How you store your battery affects how long it lasts. Don't store your scooter at 100% charge if you're not riding it for a while — this stresses the cells and accelerates degradation. Likewise, don't store it at 0% — that can damage cells permanently. The ideal storage charge is 40-60%. If you're going on holiday or not riding for a month, charge to 50% and store in a cool, dry place. Avoid hot sheds or garages in summer — heat kills batteries. Also, don't charge your battery immediately after riding hard on a hot day. Let it cool down for 30 minutes first. These simple practices can extend battery life by years. 4. Keep Connectors Clean and Dry
Electrical connectors are a common failure point. Water, dirt, and corrosion on connector pins cause intermittent faults, power loss, and mysterious errors. Check your connectors every few months — unplug them, inspect for corrosion (green or white crud on the pins), and clean with contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol if needed. Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to protect against moisture. Pay special attention to the battery connector, motor connector, and display connector. If you ride in the rain, dry your scooter off afterwards and check that water hasn't gotten into connector housings. A bit of preventative cleaning saves a lot of diagnostic headaches later.
5. Check Bolt Tightness Every Few Weeks
Scooters vibrate when you ride, and vibration loosens bolts over time. A loose stem bolt can make the handlebars wobble (dangerous at speed). A loose wheel axle can cause wheel play and damage bearings. A loose folding mechanism can make the whole scooter feel unstable. Every few weeks, go around your scooter and check critical bolts with a hex key set. Key bolts to check: stem clamp bolts, handlebar clamp bolts, folding mechanism bolts, wheel axle nuts, and brake caliper bolts. You don't need to crank them super tight — just snug them up if they've backed off. Use a drop of threadlocker (Loctite Blue) on critical bolts if they keep loosening. This check takes 5 minutes and prevents accidents.
Bonus Tip: Listen to Your Scooter
New noises, vibrations, or handling changes are warning signs. If your scooter starts making a grinding noise, rattling, or feeling different to ride, don't ignore it. The earlier you diagnose a problem, the cheaper it is to fix. We've seen customers ignore a minor noise for weeks until it turns into a major failure. If something doesn't feel right, bring it in for a check. We offer free diagnostics if you end up getting the repair done with us.
