Solid vs Pneumatic Tyres for E-Scooters: Which Should You Choose?

Written by Nick from ElectriFix Perth

One of the most common questions we get: should I stick with pneumatic (air-filled) tyres or switch to solid tyres? There's no perfect answer — it depends on what you value more: comfort or reliability. Let's break down the pros and cons of each.

Ride Comfort: Pneumatic Wins

Pneumatic tyres give a much smoother ride. The air inside acts as a shock absorber, cushioning bumps, cracks, and rough surfaces. On Perth's roads (which aren't always smooth), this makes a noticeable difference. Solid tyres have no give — every bump transfers straight through to your feet and hands. After 30 minutes on solid tyres, you feel it. If ride comfort is your priority and you mostly ride on decent roads, pneumatic tyres are the clear choice.

Puncture Risk: Solid Wins

Solid tyres can't get punctures. No thorns, no glass, no flats. If you've been stuck on the side of the road with a flat tyre, you know how frustrating it is. For commuters who can't afford to be late, solid tyres eliminate that risk entirely. Pneumatic tyres will eventually get punctures — it's just a matter of when. If you ride through industrial areas, parks with bindis, or areas with construction debris, you'll get flats regularly. Solid tyres are particularly popular with delivery riders and daily commuters for this reason.

Grip and Handling: Pneumatic Wins

Pneumatic tyres deform to match the road surface, giving better grip. This matters in corners, on wet surfaces, and on uneven ground. Solid tyres are harder and don't flex as much, so they have less contact patch and less grip. On a dry, smooth road the difference is minor. On wet roads or gravel, the difference is noticeable. If you ride in the rain or on mixed surfaces, pneumatic tyres are safer.

Weight: Pneumatic Wins

Solid tyres are heavier. Adding solid tyres adds 1-2kg to your scooter, which reduces range slightly and makes the scooter harder to carry. If you need to lift your scooter into a car or carry it up stairs, weight matters. Pneumatic tyres are lighter because they're mostly air. The weight difference isn't huge, but it's real.

Maintenance: Solid Wins

Solid tyres are zero maintenance. No pressure to check, no tubes to replace, no punctures to fix. Pneumatic tyres need regular pressure checks (weekly is ideal) and eventual tube/tyre replacement when they wear or puncture. If you want a set-and-forget solution, solid tyres are easier.

Cost: It Depends

Solid tyres cost more upfront ($80-$120 per tyre installed vs $65 for a pneumatic tyre). But over time, you won't pay for puncture repairs. If you're getting flats every month, solid tyres pay for themselves. If you rarely get flats, pneumatic tyres are cheaper overall.

Our Honest Recommendation

If you're riding for recreation or leisure, stick with pneumatic tyres. The comfort and grip are worth carrying a spare tube. If you're commuting daily and reliability is critical, go solid. If you're unsure, start with pneumatic — you can always switch to solid later if flats become a problem. We install both types at ElectriFix Perth and we'll give you honest advice based on how you ride.
